Historic House Florence

The Hamlet

The hamlet of Borgo I Vicelli is deeply rooted in the life of Florence and its surrounding territory.
The first historical mention of its structure dates back to the 1500’s in relation to the Fattoria of San Donato (a local farm) which belonged to the ancient Spedale Degl'Innocenti of Florence, an organization still known today for its commitment to the care of abandoned children.
Founded as one of the institute’s many farms, it was run by a head farmer and inhabited by agricultural workers and peasants who produced part of the goods necessary to sustain the children and those who looked after them.
The name Vicelli is ancient and rare. It could means “little vico”, or “little street” or it most likely derives from the archaic Ladin term "viec" (copper jug), perhaps indicating that the family founders who donated the land to the institution were wine makers.
As the farm’s activities increased, so did the buildings of its structure which continued to be enlarged and renovated up until 1800, when the manor house was added to the group of dwellings.
However, the story of Borgo I Vicelli is primarily one of a family’s passion for an enchanting small village situated around an ancient and accommodating country villa. The hamlet was originally constructed for agricultural purposes with an olive grove, a mill for the production of olive oil, and a surrounding reserve. Yet with the passage of time, its farming activities and buildings were abandoned. Now, thanks to the dedication and hard work of its current owners, the borgo has been restored to its ancient splendor for guest hospitality and the organization of events, in full respect of its historical origins.
The redevelopment project of the farm and its surrounding estate represented a major challenge, undergoing significant changes and adaptations over time. The extensive renovations of the buildings also took into account their environmental impact. For instance, solar panels are used for the production of hot water.
In the green foothills of Florence, close to town yet nestled among olive groves and woods, a charming farmhouse, a country inn, has been brought back to life for the enjoyment of all, combining warm and friendly hospitality with pure elegance and refinement.
The gestures, unique moments, thoughts and dreams of Borgo I Vicelli’s guests allow them to relive today the history, culture, hard work and emotions of those who once lived here where only the stones remain as tangible witnesses.
